BREADLESS HORSEMAN, BIG CITY

Gordon McLeod Jenkins, a.k.a. The Breadless Horseman, is living one of my dreams: He's walking the length of the Appalachian Trail—the 2175 mile footpath that stretches from Georgia to Maine! Plus, he's doing it to raise money for the Celiac Disease Center at Columbia University.

And I think he's making the trek with impressive speed! Keeping track of his progress on his blog, The Gluten-Free AT, I thought there was plenty of time before his arrival in the greater metropolitan area. But now I see that he's already arrived in New York City!

So congrats to Gordon (pictured) on making it this far! (Actually, I think NYC is a detour.) I wonder if he's still in the city, or at least relatively close....

And thanks to the CeliacChicks for bringing Gordon's long walk to my attention!

Hi, David - I read your comment on my son Gordon's (aka The Breadless Horseman) blog, and I followed the thread to your blog. Gordon has loved reading the comments from people who have discovered his journal and read about his adventure with gluten free hiking. Thanks for commenting. He had a great time in NYC. According to his sister, he ate constantly. I think he visited Whole Foods and bought lots of Lee Tobin's good gluten free bread. Interestingly, he misses sandwiches quite a bit, so that was one of his indulgences while in NY. - Hope you will continue to follow his progress. One of the best parts of the journey for him has been discovering several great communities of people, one of which is the gluten-free community.
Gordon got back on the Trail near Peekskill, NY on Sunday, July 1.
Thanks for your interest.

D'oh! I had this idea about meeting him on the trail, perhaps with a group of other gf people, and treating him to some good food, but I totally misjudged his pace. Dang!

Maybe others will be able to pull it off as he heads for Maine.

At any rate (pun intended), thanks for your note and congratulations on your son's progress!
