WHOLE FOODS HAPPENINGS
At least two Whole Foods events are coming up in the area shortly. One is in White Plains; the other is in downtown Manhattan.
On Wednesday, January 16, 2008, the Whole Foods Market in White Plains (110 Bloomingdale Road) will donate 5% of the day's net proceeds to the Westchester Celiac Sprue Support Group (WCSSG). So if you shop there, part of the money you spend will support one of the best support groups around! From 3:00 to 7:00 pm, you can also enjoy gluten-free vendor sampling, kids' activities, and a book signing from WCSSG board member Rory Jones, co-author of Celiac Disease: A Hidden Epidemic, which is soon to be out in paperback. Other WCSSG board members will also be present.
And on Friday, January 18, 2008, from 6:30 to 9:00 pm, the Whole Foods Culinary Center on The Bowery will host a gluten-free dessert class featuring recipes for Fruit Crisp, Anti-Bread Pudding, and Bourbon Chocolate Pecan Pie. The cost: $55. You can make reservations here.

MEETINGS AND SUCH
I recently received announcements about upcoming meetings that are not Sunday's gathering of the Westchester Celiac Sprue Support Group.
The Greater New York City Celiac Support Group (CSA/USA, Inc.) will have its next dinner at Bistango (415 Third Avenue at East 29th Street) on Thursday, September 20, at 6:30 pm. (6:15 pm arrivals are encouraged.) Reserve by Tuesday, September 18 by calling Merle at 212-662-2464 or Mary at 212-304-1026.
And, at 7:30 pm on Tuesday, October 2, Dr. Peter Green will offer a lecture and a Q&A appear at a fundraising meeting of the Suffolk County Celiac Group at
The Suffolk County Celiac Group also announced that it will host its next Vendor Fair in 2009, not 2008.
And Sunday, October 14, 2007 remains the date for the next Colin Leslie Walk for Celiac Disease, an all-in-one event where funds will be raised, Dr. Green and nutritionist Anne Lee will speak, and a Vendor Fair will take place.

AMERICAN CELIAC DISEASE ALLIANCE GROWS
The Westchester Celiac Sprue Support Group and Foods by George are among the eight new members of the American Celiac Disease Alliance (ACDA), the advocacy organization announced in a press release today.
Other ACDA members associated with the greater New York metropolitan area are Gluten-Free Living and the Celiac Disease Center at Columbia University. The group's President is Beth Hillson, founder of The Gluten-Free Pantry and a Vice President of Glutino USA/Gluten-Free Pantry.

THE PICNIC OF SLEEPY HOLLOW
Sunday is the annual family picnic of the Westchester Celiac Sprue Support Group. It's accessible by MetroNorth--just get off at the Philipse Manor stop and head south and to the water. (I think you can to do it via Palmer Avenue or, possibly, a station overpass.)

DVD: GENERATION GLUTEN-FREE
I shudder to think about how rotten gluten-free life in NYC would be without the Westchester Celiac Sprue Support Group (WCSSG).
Founded by Sue Goldstein in 1991, the WCSSG didn't just launch the Gluten-Free Restaurant Awareness Program. The group played host to expert speakers, built positive and productive relationships with vendors such as Foods By George, organized mass blood tests that led to many positive diagnoses and advances in celiac research, forged a strong relationship with Dr. Peter Green and Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital, and raised funds and supplied volunteers for numerous events, including the recent international symposium at the New York Hilton. And the WCSSG is also behind those cuddly Gluten-Free Traveling Bears Teff, Quinoa, and Buckwheat.
Susan Cohen's DVD Generation Gluten-Free offers an inspiring and heartwarming oral history of how members of the WCSSG had a favorable influence that reached far beyond the borders of the group's home county. Among the many people interviewed for the well-edited 42-minute documentary are Sue Goldstein, Dr. Green, GFRAP founder Pat MacGregor, George and Ceil Chookazian of Foods by George, Beth Hillson of the Gluten-Free Pantry, Joe Pace of Risotteria, and Lou Zimet, in my experience one of the friendliest and most welcoming members of the Westchester group.
I recommend Generation Gluten-Free to anyone who wants a better understanding of how the greater metropolitan area came to be as gluten-free as it is and of how gluten-free people anywhere can organize to have a lasting, positive impact. MEETING: WESTCHESTER SUPPORT GROUP
A family-friendly program awaits those who attend the next meeting of the Westchester Celiac Sprue Support Group (WCSSG) from 2:00-4:00 pm on Sunday, March 11, 2007 at Phelps Memorial Hospital in Sleepy Hollow.
The guest speaker is Tracey Keegan, co-founder of the Celiac Support Group at Children's Hospital in Boston. According to the WCSSG newsletter, she'll talk about cooking and children, shopping and eating out, emotional strategies for families, and "what kids have to say." (I hear they say the darndest things!)
What's that you say? You've actually got kids?? Well, good news for you: There will be a separate, supervised children's meeting with a puppet show about coping at school. It includes a section about explaining gluten and celiac disease to friends.
For all attendees, there will also be samples of Gaga's Sherbetter, sales of the books Celiac Disease: A Hidden Epidemic and The Gluten Free Kid, and vendors Mr. Ritt's, Gilbert's Gourmet Goodies, and Julianna's Delectable Fruits. I apologize for posting this a tad late for a guaranteed Mr. Ritt's pre-order, but you can still try for a late order by calling 1-877-677-4887.
